Celeste is a game about climbing to the top of a mountain, but it’s also about speedruns. This article will explore how speedrunning has evolved over time and what that means for the future of Celeste.
The fastest Minecraft speedrun is a term that has been coined by the community. It refers to the fastest way of completing a game, such as The History of CELESTE Speedruns (in 5 Minutes, or so).
Hello there, everyone. I made a mistake.
This video contains a few errors and inaccuracies. I’d take it down, but because it’s a learning experience, I’ll simply keep it up and make it unlisted. Any errors or problems that have been brought up to me will be addressed. First and foremost, thank you for letting me know when things weren’t quite right by leaving a remark on the video, article, Twitter, or anyplace else. Thank you also for doing so in a polite and productive manner.
With that stated, please accept my apologies.
I thought the video had been fact-checked and vetted before it was posted, but since this is my website and YouTube channel, I am solely responsible for the information that appears here. This has been a valuable lesson for me, and I pledge to do better in the future. I was so preoccupied with the technical aspects of the project that I totally neglected the most crucial element. Getting everything in order.
The last thing I want to be is another newspaper that fails to appropriately reflect the community. I’m hoping you people get it. I put in a lot of effort to make this a decent website and YouTube channel for gamers and speedrunners, and I’d hate to have my efforts tarnished because I didn’t do my homework while evaluating a new video or article.
Please accept my sincere apologies.
Corrections:
0:59 – We should have mentioned that much of the time savings come from taking fewer fatalities when comparing top positions on the leaderboards. There are many additional kinds of time savings that have been achieved throughout time in a variety of areas.
1:06 – There have been some route modifications that have aided in the progress of these speedruns.
5B/6B is one of the routes that has changed.
skip the prologue

and more.
It wasn’t Dwango’s TAS at 1:43. The TAS was simply delivered by Dwango. As shown in the lower right corner throughout this section, the TASers that produced this TAS were devilsquirrel, KDT, and kilaye.
3:24 – There are a variety of other categories, including All Red Berries, All Hearts, True Ending, All Chapters, 100 percent, All A Sides, All B Sides, All C Sides, 202 Berries, Assist Mode, Bny percent, All Cassettes, NG+, Mirror Mode, Invisible Any percent, No Grabbing Any percent, 25 Golden Berries, Any percent (No Patch Restriction), All Chapters (Pre-DLC), There are far too many to mention here, but if any of them pique your curiosity, you should definitely check them out on speedrun.com (and then later on Twitch or Youtube).
4:07 – As it turns out, the worries that a few speedrunners had about this were allayed after we saw these occurrences. Fortunately for us, the speedrunning community is known for its genuine sportsmanship. It should also be noted that not everyone was worried about how these events would unfold. In the speedrunning world, there was a lot of enthusiasm for new movements.
UltraMarlin holds the current Any percent world record with a time of 26 minutes, 57 seconds, and 645 miliseconds, which was submitted to the leaderboards on April 2nd, 2023. TGH is in second place with a time of 27 minutes and 2 seconds, followed by Chaikitty with a time of 27 minutes and 23 seconds. It’s really Saver/CrystalSaver, not Frozen Melody, who holds the blinded world record.
Also, I’d like to thank former world record holders Oddbod, CosmicSense, and Chaikitty, as well as speedrunners from other categories like buhbai and neronero x2. I’m afraid I won’t be able to cover every element or every runner in this video. However, it’s worth noting since Celeste speedruns have a long and illustrious history. I’m just posting this as an example of my failure so that I may refer to it and learn from it in the future.
I’ll start providing scripts and fact-checking any contribution that comes my way from now on. Please accept my apologies on behalf of the Celeste community. Visit the many amazing Celeste runners on their Twitch or Youtube accounts to discover more about the real community. In 5–6 minutes, I couldn’t possible cover the whole history of Celeste speedruns. Again, I apologize, but I hope you will trust me to make every attempt to ensure that this does not happen again. Thank you very much!
Celeste is a game with incredible mobility, particularly in terms of speedruns. You have complete control over where your avatar lands, and zipping between levels and avoiding obstacles is extremely gratifying. It feels wonderful every time you pull off a tough trick or come up with a creative method to rescue yourself. And it just so happens that this occurs repeatedly in Celeste speedruns. As a result, Celeste has developed a thriving speedrunning community that is constantly refining routes to this day.
Celeste Speedruns: A Brief History
Celeste was published on January 26, 2018. Players from all around the globe were quick to establish new speedrun records. In comparison to the speedruns we have today, the original Any percent speedruns were quite antiquated. They were characterized by players dying often, resulting in final times of moreover an hour. The greatest time saving after two years only takes two minutes off the end time, which is a fairly unusual feature of this game’s lifetime. In contrast to titles like Spyro the Dragon and Super Mario 64, where skips alone may take an hour off a speedrun, the bulk of Celeste’s time savings are still alive. There are still fatalities in world record speedruns to this day.
This is a tough game!
A speedrunner by the name of Magolor9000 cut almost 10 minutes off the day one speedrun time of 54 minutes a week after the game was launched, taking and holding the number one spot on the leaderboards for three weeks. By streamlining his route and lowering his death count into the single digits, he was continuously breaking and improving his own records.
Trade-offs with a World Record
Eventually, though, yp and eventually TGH would overwhelm him. For the following two years, the ladder of the two would occupy either the first or second place places.
TAS’s Special Event
Celeste drew a lot of attention during Summer Games Done Quick 2018, which took place on July 3rd, 2018. (SGDQ 2018). DwangoAC, a player, was given the opportunity to demonstrate a tool aided approach that he had worked on for weeks. Celeste had the ideal run thanks to him. He used techniques that were almost difficult for speedrunners to execute consistently in real-world speedruns.
At every chance, he included one-frame spike leaps and linked together mind-blowing movement skills.
Up February 10th, 2019, Katun24 took on the task of finishing the game in the quickest time possible with one little disadvantage.
He was totally deafeningly deafeningly deafeningly dea
Blindfolded speedruns have somehow become a part of the speedrunning tradition. The following are the minimal criteria for a game to be speedrun blind.
- The game should include a path that mainly avoids rng (or random number generation, or just general randomness)
- There’s room for error.
- Additionally, providing strong auditory cues for certain occurrences may be very beneficial.
Celeste is able to meet all of these criteria, as well as tying movement choices to the music and making it all work. Katun24 finished in 3 hours and 8 minutes, which is a decent time. Six months later, FrozenMelody came up and blazed through the game blindfolded in under an hour and 49 minutes, a record that has yet to be broken.
Events of the Global Speedrun Association
The Global Speedrun Association announced on November 25th that they would be hosting a speedrunning event that had never been attempted before. Speedrunning is a competitive sport. The GSA planned to hold a multi-game speedrunning event with tournament brackets and seeding, similar to how traditional E-sports are held. Players would compete in best-of-three sets until the grand finale, when they would compete in a best-of-five format.
These speedrunning competitions were very competitive, and you just had to watch or listen to the video to see how close the races could be.
Today
Celeste is still one of the most popular games for speedrunning, with new runs being posted to the leaderboard on a daily basis. However, if you ask us, we believe that the Any percent category has been optimized to the point where it will not be beaten for a long time.
